Averting Allergies

allergyAllergies can be caused by various factors – environmental, insect bite, food intake, heredity, medicinal reaction, hygiene and so on. Adding to the malady – shift in climatic conditions, escalating temperature and greenhouse gases all over the world, rise in humidity resulted in extended allergy season. Worse for people who are more allergy-sensitive as it can be minimal to detrimental. One first needs to detect the potential allergen or the root cause behind the eruption in order to customize an effective prevention.  Allergies affect many unlikely aspects of life – such as sleep, energy etc. However, by and large allergies are easily curable with proper administration of medicine.  But if the outbreak becomes rampant then it’s subject to expert treatment.

Various potential causes and cautions:

Food tops the list of most likely causes of allergy. Food allergies are very common and typical all over the world. Most allergenic foods are shell-fishes like shrimp, crab, oysters; eggs; different types of nuts/ tree nuts and sometimes even milk, soy, wheat etc. Non-food elements like latex, shellac, virulent poisonous plants, polluting agents in environment, unhygienic elements around etc. can trigger eruption of allergies.

When an allergy outbreak happens it is best not to disturb the affected area of body by scratching or anointing. Some basic primary care can heal or soothe the affliction. Hot water should be avoided on affected areas as it might aggravate the rashes. Anti-bacterial soap helps in all different cases as it prevents or reduces effects of a potential allergen. It is better to avoid direct or indirect application of any anti-septic or anti-bacterial liquid.

Keeping aside above first-aids and the prescribed medication for particular type of eruption, which is a different consideration, altogether, let’s move on to analyse the usefulness of the ingredients easily available in our kitchen garden or either one differently. Rich spices such as Cayenne Pepper combats inflammation and relieves pain.  Ginger, a natural anti-inflammatory, has been used in considerable measure by the Chinese to relieve pain. Honey fights against bacterial infection and reduce inflammation.

Apart from these, the plants and leafy vegetables, that are known to combat allergy symptoms and inflammation, are – Broccoli – rich in Vitamin C, obliterates allergy and its symptoms; Kale – its pigments have anti-allergic properties; Collard Greens; Butterbur, preferentially its roots provide traditional remedy for inflammation as it contain petasin and isopetasin which have several benefits; elderberry benefits substantially in treating allergies and has good effect on respiratory system.

According to some recent studies Mediterranean food-habit diet comprising more of fish, fruits, nuts and vegetables, causes virtual absence of allergy symptoms among its population. Grapes, oranges, tomatoes are proven to be helpful in reducing allergic effects. Apple especially, contains a flavanoid that has antihistamine and anti-inflammatory properties. Apart from the fruits, fishes like salmon also show good effect on allergies. Omega-3 fatty acid that is contained in salmon possesses cure for inflammation, weak immunity, asthma and allergies. Onion, garlic, parsley are also good anti-allergic food elements. Foods rich in magnesium, vitamin C are beneficial for allergic reaction and asthma.
