Heart burn is a Major problem that plagues a lot of people frequently. It is mainly due to the acid reflux from the stomach into the oesophagus that causes a severe burning sensation in the chest. Though a lot of over-the-counter medications are commonly used to get rid of the heart burn, it can be effectively treated and even prevented by following some simple lifestyle changes.
Since a lot of people suffer from this problem at night, making slight changes in the sleeping postures can help reduce the heart burn. Always turn to your left side when sleeping and keep your head a good few inches above the level of the bed. By lying down with your entire body at the same level as the bed, the acid easily enter your oesophagus.
A lot of foods, especially when taken at night can trigger heart burn in many individuals. So those who suffer from this problem should stay away from having these foods for dinner or before going to sleep. Even if you are including these in your dinner, finish your meal 3-4 hours before going to sleep. The main foods that trigger heart burns are Spicy foods, fried and oily foods, colas and sodas, caffeinated drinks, fatty foods and citrus fruits and juices. Smoking and alcohol should also be strictly avoided.
Bananas are good in antacid properties. So when you feel that burning sensation in the chest, grab a ripened banana and eat it to relieve you of the pain. If you have this problem very frequently, have a ripe banana daily at night.
Munching on some almonds every time you eat food can help neutralize the acids and help you fight the heart burn effectively.
Gingerroot tea helps as an acid buffer and is very useful for those who suffer from regular bouts of heart burn. Chop some pieces of gingerroot and let them simmer in boiling water for 20-30 minutes. Keep it covered and let it seep for 10 minutes. This should be had daily half an hour before meals. Other herbal teas like Chamomile and liquorice root also have soothing effects for heartburn.
IS MILK GOOD OR BAD
A lot of people try to cure acid refluxes with a glass of milk but his may not work for everyone, especially in severe cases. Though milk initially seems to give relief, this is just a temporary effect and in fact can trigger more pain because the fat in the milk may help in the production of more acid. However if you want a little relief and decide to gulp down a glass anyway, it is best to have skimmed milk or low fat milk.
Heartburn can be cured using many of these following methods but in long run, certain lifestyle changes are necessary. Eating early and not lying down immediately after eating, chewing the food properly and avoiding spicy foods are the healthy habits to be adopted. But in severe cases, do pop in the medicated pills for longer relief from heartburns.
