Cats are a tricky animal to deal with, in terms of getting rid of the fleas. They are sensitive to essential oils and natural flea repellents can’t be used on them as they lick themselves so much. The following treatments should give your cat immediate relief.
Method 1: Fleas comb
This is a combination of lemon and fine toothed comb. Fleas hate the overwhelming smell of lemon juice and hence, this works twice as better than using just the comb. Take three chopped lemons in a pot with three cups of water and boil them. Now, remove the pot from the stove and let the lemons steep in water for three hours. After it is done, strain the lemon and its fibres from the liquid and pour it into a spray bottle. Spray the lemon essence over the coat of your cat and go through it with the comb. This method is very effective in getting rid of the fleas. Make sure your cat doesn’t have any problem with the smell of the lemons. If the cat’s fine with lemon smell spray some lemon juice on to the bedding area of the cat.
Method 2: Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoo
A combination of apple cider vinegar and mild shampoo works wonders. Mix both the items in equal quantities. Start working the shampoo mixture into their fur, starting from the head. After working the shampoo in the coat of your cat, let it sit for 5-10 minutes. Rinse the shampoo mixture out of your cat’s fur and follow this up by the fleas comb routine. Your cat might not give in for a bath, just spray the apple-cider vinegar over your cat’s fur and let it sit on the cat for 5-10 minutes. Now, gently pour water from a cup or a mug to rinse off the vinegar solution.
Method 3: Dry D.E
D.E. stands for Diatomaceous Earth. Available in powder form, it doesn’t pose any form of danger to humans or animals but kills the pests. It is important to note that only food grade DE must be used, other than that it won’t be as effective. Take small amount of DE in your hands, make sure you are wearing gloves, to avoid not to pick fleas yourself. Pat or sprinkle the DE onto your cat’s fur and work it into the fur. Take special care of not getting too close to the cat’s nose with the DE. Carry out this treatment once every day.
Method 4: Flea Trap
It isn’t a national secret that fleas aren’t the brightest of god’s creation. They get attracted to light and are attracted towards it. Place a bowl with small amount of soapy water under a night light. This will attract them towards the bowl in the night, they’ll fall in the water and dry. It is best to use warm water as it works the best against the fleas.
As a precautionary measure, you might as well clean all the beddings of your can and dust them with DE. Also make sure you vacuum the house regularly especially in the areas where your cat roams most often.
